The tread pattern in summer tires is streamlined, featuring fewer grooves, which maximizes the contact area with the road for better traction and braking. However, they are not suitable for winter conditions, as the rubber compound becomes hard and less effective below 45°F (7°C).
Winter Tires: Designed for cold weather, winter tires contain more natural rubber in their compound, which remains flexible in lower temperatures. Their tread pattern is characterized by deeper blocks and numerous sipes (small slits) to effectively grip snow and ice and prevent hydroplaning. These tires shouldn’t be used in summer as their softer compound wears out quickly on dry asphalt and increases fuel consumption.
All-Season Tires: All-season tires are a hybrid solution, incorporating features of both summer and winter tires. They are suitable for regions with mild winter conditions, offering a balance of efficiency in various weather conditions. However, they may not perform as well as specialized summer or winter tires in extreme temperatures.
Run-Flat Tires: These tires are designed to remain operational even after a puncture, allowing you to drive for a limited distance (usually up to 50 miles) to reach a safe location or a garage. They have reinforced sidewalls to support the vehicle even when the tire is deflated. However, once punctured, they generally cannot be repaired and must be replaced.
4×4 Tires: Specifically designed for off-road vehicles, 4×4 tires have a more widely spaced tread pattern with larger blocks and deeper grooves. This design prevents mud and debris from clogging the tread, providing better traction on challenging terrains like mud, grass, and snow.
Symbols: One of the most significant is the Snowflake Symbol, also known as the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) symbol. This symbol, found on the sidewall of winter and some all-season tires, indicates that the tire meets specific snow traction performance requirements and is suitable for severe snow conditions. It’s different from the M+S (Mud and Snow) marking, which is based on a manufacturer’s declaration rather than actual testing.
Each type of tire has its unique features and is suitable for different driving conditions. It’s essential to choose the right type of tire for your vehicle based on your typical driving environment and weather conditions.
In British Columbia (B.C.), Canada, navigating winter road conditions, which often include snow and ice, necessitates specific tire and chain requirements for passenger vehicles. Our region’s diverse terrain, featuring numerous high mountain passes, demands that drivers equip their vehicles appropriately for safe travel during the winter months, typically starting in October.
Tread Depth: Legal winter tires for standard passenger vehicles or four-wheel/all-wheel vehicles must have a minimum tread depth of 3.5 mm.
Labeling: Tires must be marked with the letters “M” and “S” (mud + snow/all-season tires), which is the minimum legal requirement.
The preferred option is tires marked with the 3-peaked mountain/snowflake symbol. Some tires feature both this symbol and the M+S label. Recommendations: The use of 3-peaked mountain/snowflake tires is recommended for better traction on snow and ice. For extreme conditions, carrying chains is advised.
Note: Summer tires are not permitted for use during designated winter months on signed B.C. highways, and using chains on summer tires is not a substitute for legal winter tires.
Chains, Traction Devices, and Additional Safety
Matching Winter Tires: It’s recommended to use four matching winter tires in terms of tread type and depth. However, at a minimum, two matching winter tires should be installed on the primary drive axle, even for 4X4 vehicles. Mixing different tread patterns, constructions, and sizes can compromise vehicle stability.
Air Pressure: Proper air pressure is crucial for extending tread life and ensuring safety. Tire pressure should be checked at least once a month when tires are cold, as it decreases in lower temperatures.
Types of Traction Devices:
Chains: When used on the primary drive axle, steel link chains offer superior traction on snow and ice. Cable chains are also adequate, though they may lead to lateral slippage on banked curves.
Studded Tires: Allowed from October 1 to April 30, studded tires should not have studs protruding more than 2 mm from the tire’s tread or traction surface. They are subject to fines if used outside this period. Studded tires, when used, should be on all four wheels to ensure even traction.
Textile Tire Cover: This sheath, when placed over a winter tire, enhances traction similarly to steel tire chains. They are effective on snow and ice but degrade quickly on asphalt.
